Let’s solve the Montgomery County Sentinel cartoon-plagiarism mystery through crowdsourcing!

The Montgomery County Sentinel, a newspaper in Maryland, has been systematically stealing artwork from across the Internet for its editorial cartoons, butchering it, removing the original artist’s signature, and having someone else sign it as the work of “William Charles.” (See coverage in The Washington PostBethesda Magazine, and the Daily Cartoonist.)

Some of the cartoons are straight whole-frame rip-offs, which made it easy to find the originals through the use of a reverse Google image search.  But many of the plagiarized cartoons were collages of work stolen from several different sources, which makes identification of the original artist more difficult.

This is where you come in! Let’s crowdsource this.  Below are 84 cartoons that were published in the Sentinel over the past three years. Look around the Internet.  If you recognize or can find the artwork that makes up any part of the frame, whether it’s yours or someone else’s, click on the link below the cartoon and let me know.  Clicking on the link creates an email tagged to that cartoon; please include as much contact information for the original cartoonist as you can in the email. I’ll assemble a list of which cartoons contain stolen content, and from whom. If you can include a link to the original artwork, that would be great. I’ll assemble the information and continue to get the word out.

The crowdsourcing is going gangbusters! As of June 27, 2015, of the 84 cartoons, fully 81 have had stolen content tracked down within them!

35 have had most or all of the art tracked down (and shown below on this page).
5 have had the original artist identified.
41d Sentinel cartoons have a small bird figure stolen from cartoonist Khalil Bendib, and may have other stolen content that has not yet been identified.
